The recent takeover of Afghanistan by the Taliban has left the whole country in fear, especially women, children, and minorities.

There is a sense of disorder in the whole country, but do you know technology has been a very prominent part of this win, and that is all we gonna talk about in this story.

After 2001 defeat

Back in 2001 when America removed the Taliban from Afghanistan they seemed to have learned from their own failures.

  • within a few years of defeat by the U.S. military, the militants who’d once has nothing to do with technology were now using surveillance drones and coordinating their political and operational messaging using their mobile handsets.
  • According to an MIT Technology Review report, the Taliban have mastered the dangerous art of roadside bombs, or IEDs explosive technology as they’re more commonly known.
  • Earlier the bombs were fitted with pressure plates to activate them but for the last two decades, the Taliban have found a way to control and trigger the bombs remotely by simply setting them off with a touch on their phone screens.

Power of Social media

  • Last and the most powerful tool that helped them took over Afghanistan is social media. They have started getting an immense following from local and international audiences

Age-old simple propaganda tools like videos of bombs in action were used to strengthen team spirit and to recruit people on social media. Facebook and YouTube have imposed a blanket ban on all Taliban content based on US sanctions from 1999, while Twitter hasn’t enforced a ban on the militant organization.

Where WhatsApp, a subsidiary of Facebook Inc claims that it cannot ban the Taliban. Why? It pins it on the encryption offered by the service, saying they can’t ban what they can’t read

THE END…✔

So, this is how the Taliban make use of basic technologies to take over Afghanistan. so if you liked this article in some or the other way hit that clap button and will be right back with another story talking about technology.
